Celebrating the Legendary Home Run King Roger Maris
Over 50 years ago a man from Fargo, North Dakota hit 61 home runs in 1961. Major League Baseball would not recognize it as the home run record and implied that an asterisk be added to the number 61*. The asterisk was removed in 1991, but Roger Maris died in 1985 never knowing the record was solely his.
To many, it is the greatest record in all of sports. In 1998 his record was broken and since has been broken six times by three people all tied to the controversial steroid era. Roger Maris hit 61 home runs on pure talent and natural power alone, with no help from anything else.
So on this day enjoy a bag of “Flavor 61”. And every time you see one go over the fence, remember that a man from the Upper Midwest set the single season record in 1961 by hitting more home runs than anyone else, and he did it the right way.
